David Henry Hwang (Chinese: ; pinyin: Hung Zhln; born August 11, 1957) is an American playwright who has risen to prominence as the preeminent Asian American dramatist in the U.S. He was born in Los Angeles, California and was educated at the Yale School of Drama and Stanford University.
David Henry Hwang is the author of the Tony Award–winning M. Butterfly, a finalist for the 1988 Pulitzer Prize. Other plays include Golden Child , FOB , The Dance and the Railroad , and Family Devotions ; his opera libretti include three works for composer Philip Glass.
One of the leading scholars of Asian American theatre, Lee discussed Hwang in her A History of Asian American Theatre in terms of his meteoric rise from Stanford undergraduate to Off-Broadway sensation in the early 1980s, and his role in the protest against the use of yellow-face casting in Miss Saigon.
